OU Poet to launch new pamphlet at exhibition

Nigel Kent is to launch his latest pamphlet, Benchwarmers, at a unique exhibition at a gallery in Cheltenham.

Benchwarmers was joint winner of the Hedgehog Poetry Press’ ‘A Wee Collection’ challenge, along with Beyond the School Gate by Kate Young, another OUPS member.

Nigel explains: “Benchwarmers gives a voice to those who live their lives at the margins, such as the autistic boy, the looked-after child, the young offender, the anorexic, the painfully shy. They are life’s outsiders, whom circumstances have conspired against: they are the also-rans, the subs confined to the bench, waiting for the call that never comes. In these poems I try to make visible the invisible and invite the reader to make a connection.”

The exhibition, Viewpoints is the product of a collaboration between Nigel, artist, Stephen Belinfante, and photographer, Nick Browne, in which their works are grouped to create striking, dynamic relationships that sometimes complement, sometimes conflict and sometimes extend, thereby enriching the viewer’s response to each individual work.

Viewpoints runs from March 22nd-March 28th at the Spring Gallery (14 Rotunda Terrace, Montpellier Street, Cheltenham).

Benchwarmers will be launched at a private view and reading on the afternoon of the 25th, when Nigel will also read from Paris Reflected, a pamphlet of photographs and poems, specially produced for the exhibition by Nigel and Nick.
